White Shoal Light will re-open for public tours beginning in July 2024!
Things have been quiet for a while, but that doesn't mean there aren't lots of exciting developments going on behind the scenes at White Shoal Light:
We will remain closed to the public for the 2022 and 2023 seasons as we continue restoration work at the lighthouse. This summer, we will continue to concentrate on waterproofing the lantern and parapet as well as continuing to re-wire the tower from the bottom up.
We also have representatives from the Great Lakes Marine Coatings Division of Sherwin Williams (they handle most of the lake freighter painting on the Great Lakes) visiting us in July to help us put together a plan for painting the tower and lantern! The boathouse and balcony still need the most work and investment. Attention to these areas will be ongoing as we continue to experiment with modern coatings and restoration methods.
We are very excited to announce the launch of TITAN TUGBOAT TOURS beginning in July 2024. Our custom-built tugboat will take guests on tours all over the Straits of Mackinac and will be customized to visit different destinations each trip. Stops will include private tours to White Shoal Light as well as trips up the St. Mary's River to the Soo Locks, and down the Inland Waterway, through the locks, from Cheboygan to Burt Lake. Stay tuned as we will be announcing more exciting details this Fall!
We're saving the United States' only barber-pole lighthouse.
